Abstract
The European Viscosupplementation Consensus Group (EUROVISCO) has published expert recommendations on the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections, also known as viscosupplementation, in the management of hip osteoarthritis.
Based on a comprehensive review of scientific literature and the clinical expertise of 12 specialists, these recommendations highlight viscosupplementation as a treatment option for patients with hip osteoarthritis who do not require surgery, particularly those with mild to moderate disease.
The experts emphasize that viscosupplementation is generally safe and well tolerated, including when repeated injections are considered. They recommend performing injections under imaging guidance, following a preliminary X-ray assessment, and favouring a single-injection protocol. Treatment may also be considered for patients wishing to delay joint replacement surgery, although hip replacement should not be performed within three months of an injection.
Finally, the recommendations stress that viscosupplementation should be part of a comprehensive, multimodal approach to hip osteoarthritis management rather than a standalone treatment.
