Understanding joints
A joint is where two bones meet. Joints hold the bones together and allow our rigid skeleton to move and be flexible.
Cartilage is a hard, smooth tissue that covers the end of bones. Between the cartilage of two bones which form a joint, there is a small amount of thick fluid called synovial fluid. Both this fluid and cartilage act as shock absorbers, cushioning and lubricating the joint and helping to prevent bones from rubbing against each other.
About osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage covering the end of the bones gradually breaks down. Without the protection of the cartilage, the bones begin to rub against each other and the resulting friction leads to pain, swelling, inflammation and reduced movement of the affected joint affecting ones ability to do physical activities and reducing then quality of life.
Osteoarthritis cannot be cured but there are a number of things that can be done to relieve the symptoms.
